New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond claimed 4 for
21 to rip apart the Bangladesh top-order and help
the Kiwis register a mammoth 167-run win over
the minnows in the last league match of the ICC
Champions Trophy at the S.S.C ground in Colombo
on Monday.
Earlier, after inserting the opposition, the
Bangladeshi bowlers did well to restrict a decent
New Zealand batting line-up to 244 for 9 in 50
overs. Matthew Sinclair made a patient 70 off
122 balls while skipper Stephen Fleming made 31.
The heavily-built Jacob Oram weighed in with a
lusty 30.
Mohammad Ashraful (3 for 26), who was the seventh
bowler called on to roll his arm over by Bangladeshi
skipper Khaled Masud, was the pick of the bowlers
while Manjural Islam and Khaled Mahmud bagged
two wickets each.
In reply, the Bangladesh batsmen were all at
sea and it was regular catching practice for the
slip cordon who hardly put a foot wrong. Only
Tushar Imran with a chancy 20 and Mohammad Rafique,
who made 17, were largely responsible for Bangladesh
reaching the eventual total.
The other six Bangladeshi wickets were equally
shared between Oram, Kyle Mills and left-armer
Daniel Vettori.
Bond bagged the Man-of-the-Match award as New
Zealand, the defending champions who have already
crashed out of the competition with a huge defeat
against the Aussies in their opening fixture,
earned a consolation victory.
