Tendulkar
joins the elite 100-Test club
by Daniel Puran Singh
When the Indian team takes the field at
The Oval against England on Thursday, it will be India's wonder-boy
Sachin Tendulkar's hundredth appearance in Tests for the national
side. It also includes a staggering successive 84-match streak
between his debut Test in Karachi late 1990 to the Harare Test
against Zimbabwe in mid 2001. Holder of many-a-international record,
this is just another remarkable feat in his already illustrious
career.
Having
made his Test debut way back in the 1989/90 season at just 16
years & 205 days, against a very potent Pakistani pace attack
which included the likes of Imran Khan and his two well-known
wards Wasim Akram and a raw Waqar Younis, he then, became the
third youngest ever to appear in Test cricket and still is the
youngest Indian to play the longer version of the game.
Come
Thursday (5th September 2002), he will be the 26th cricketer in
the annals of Tests and only the 4th Indian to achieve this rare
distinction.
Records
are not new to this man of short stature but tall deeds as he
showed in his previous Test where he came up with yet another
outstanding knock to register his 30th century - the leader still
being fellow countryman Sunil Gavaskar, who has done it on a record
34 occasions.
